22/04/201/: POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 118:1-6,21-29

A Song of Victory

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures forever!

Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”

Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
With the Lord on my side I do not fear.

21 I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!

26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches,
up to the horns of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.

29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.

GOSPEL READING

Acts 4:5-12 (NRSV)

The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11 This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.’ 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

STUDY QUESTIONS

The proof as they say “of the pudding lies in the eating” in other words the proof of the success of any recipe lies in how the dish tastes. If the recipe for your spiritual life has Jesus, and his power, as key ingredients in it, then you should see the benefits of that in how you live out each day. The questions below; depending on your answer; will help you “test” how your life might taste to the Father at present.

  1. Do you really believe that this same power, the power given by the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, that enabled Peter to heal the lame beggar, now lives in you? How does this influence your life?
  2. Do you believe that claiming that name and that power is your way to salvation? How does this influence your life?
  3. Do you understand that it isn’t just about saying the name of Jesus, but also claiming the same power of Jesus that is important for the work of the Kingdom? How does this influence your life?
  4. In South Africa with our focus on political correctness and the inclusivity of different belief systems and religious views, how should you deal with the following statement to not appear arrogant or rude and unloving…?

12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

How does this influence your life?
