“WHAT’S ON YOUR MENU?”
Please use the questions below as a guide for your devotions this week, and/or
for your group meeting if you belong to a small group. You might not get through all the questions – that is Ok – but I pray that they will help you grow in your faith and in your understanding of the Bible.
If you would like me to visit your group, then please let me know – contact Lesley on 0445333430 or admin@plettmethodist.co.za to set up a visit. If you are not part of a group, and would like to join one, then contact Don on 0834129877 and don@prism-ic.co.za
Theme: “What’s on your menu?”
Start
When you imagine the idea of a “feast” or a “banquet” what comes to mind for
you? What would the feast be like? Who is invited?
Getting into the Word 1
Readings: Luke 5: 27-39
1. If you were to invite someone famous to your home for a special dinner, how would you prepare your home, and what would you put on the menu (vs. 29)?
2. Tax Collectors were known to be corrupt and abused the financial systems of the day, and as a result became very wealthy at the expense of the people in their community. How might the disciples feel about Jesus’ choice (vs. 27)?
3. Why do you think Jesus chose Levi? What is the irony here in verses 31-32?
4. Why is Jesus questioned about fasting?
5. What do you think Jesus is implying in the parable in verses 34-35? And in verses 36-39?
6. How do you think this might relate to Levi’s call, and to the disciples not fasting?
7. What is the new cloth? Old garment? New wine? Old wineskins?
Thoughts for the week ahead:
With this story in mind, what do you have to do to qualify as a disciple? In the
way you relate to “undesirable types” are you more like Levi (inviting them to
your party), the Pharisees (looking down on them), or the disciples (unsure
what to do)? Why?
God bless,
Tim.
