“When you think about God, about Jesus, about the Holy
Spirit, what do you see?”

Please use the questions below as a guide for your devotions this week, and/or for your group meeting if you belong to a small group. You might not get through all the questions – that is Ok – but I pray that they will help you grow in your faith and in your understanding of the Bible.
If you would like me to visit your group, then please let me know – contact Lesley on 0445333430 or admin@plettmethodist.co.za to set up a visit. If you are not part of a group, and would like to join one, then contact Don on 0834129877 and don@prism-ic.co.za

Theme: “When you think about God, about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit, what do you see?”

Getting into the Word

Interesting fact, when we “think” we do so in images, and with our senses, not in words. Therefore, when you think about God, about Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, what do you see?

Readings:
Psalm 8

What is it that the Psalmist saw, that spoke to him, that described to him, who God is? Take your time in each verse and let the imagery there, build a picture for you of God.

What do you think verse 4 and 5 mean?

How does the Psalmist see the role of humankind in the plan of creation (verse 6-8)?

Does this give humans the right to “do whatever they wish” with
creation?
Jeremiah 1: 4-16

In this reading God calls Jeremiah (verses 4-8). The prophet Jeremiah was very strong on imagery and visions of God. In Jeremiah 1 we read that God asks Jeremiah “What do you see…?” As suggested above, take your time with these verses, and let the images bring you the story. For example, what does the picture of verse 5 tell you about God’s love?
What do you think verse 11 and 13 are all about?
John 14:9

Jesus revolutionized the way people were to see God! Jesus showed the world a picture of God, a picture of God’s Power, Love and Grace, that was so opposite to what they had learnt about God, that many could not accept what Jesus said that God…. IS.

Jesus makes it clear that he is the picture, the image, the reality, of who God is (see also Hebrews 1:3). What is your picture (your mental image) of Jesus?
How does your picture of Jesus influence and inform your worship of God?
How does your picture of Jesus influence and inform your worship of the Holy Spirit?

Read Hebrews 2: 9-12, how did the writer’s picture of Jesus explain how
Jesus was to be seen in the world? Is Jesus still the central focus of worship today?

Thoughts for the week ahead:

When you think of your life – what do you see? When God looks at your life – what does God see? When you think of Jesus (the Ultimate example of who God is) with you – sitting alongside you, what does he say to you?

God bless,

Tim.
