“Show us the Father!”

Readings:

Psalm 52:7, John 14: 6-14

Questions 1:

1. Put Jesus’ statement in 14:6-7 in your own words.

2. Read John 1:18 – how does that verse relate to what Jesus says in 14:9?

3. In verses 9-14 Jesus answers Philip’s question by exploring one word, the word “in.” Jesus once again claims to reveal the Father so clearly that those who see Jesus see the Father, that those who know Jesus know the Father, and that those who believe in the Father believe in Jesus. He can say this because “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (14:11). That means that everything he utters—as the Logos (the Word) (1:1, 14)—is an utterance from the Father (14:10). Why is it important to recognize that Jesus and God the Father are one? What tone of voice do you imagine Jesus speaking in, in these verses?

4. What evidence does Jesus give for his claims?

5. How might we understand verses 12–14? Do you think these verses are “blank cheque” promises about prayer?

6. In verse 12 does Jesus mean the church will do works greater in power? Greater in scope? How could this be?

Action:

If Jesus is the Way, do you feel as if your life is on a bumpy dead-end street, or on a wide open multi lane highway? Considering 14:6 how would you respond to someone who says, “there are many ways to God”?

Closing prayer

God bless,
Rev Tim
